LPS- Lean Production System

Lean Production System (LPS), widely known quality management concept, if persistently practise promises quality output of any manufacturing environment.

In automotive arena Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan is known to adhere to strict practices of LPS while in the electronic world, Motorola was and still is a firm believer in LPS. These two giants have not only survived in the respective competitive business environment but remain leaders in quality production of their products.

LPS is a communal practice within the supply network of a manufacturing industry, which failure in the practice by one of the players within the supply chain may render quality shortfall of the end products. This is particularly crucial in an automotive manufacturing environment where quality assurance of thousands the parts being produced must be within the set standards to ensure that the vehicle at the end of the assembly line will meet the final quality inspection. It is fair to say that failure to meet its quality standard of just one part within an assembled vehicle will jeopardise the quality of the whole car. To ensure high quality within the supply chain of thousands of parts of an automotive manufacturing network is a monstrous task, however giant such as Toyota has proven to successfully ensure quality of their cars though stringent practice of LPS within its supply network.

LPS is not a quality assurance procedure per se, instead it can be perceived as a mechanism inculcating right working culture within an organisation. It is through this right culture that qualities of products are assured. The system provides guidance and procedures to the broad spectrum of practices within a manufacturing environment, right from housekeeping, stock control etc., which will result in an efficient and quality production of output. Henceforth, clear understanding of the concept and stringent practice of the LPS within the automotive community will not only result in quality output but will also help in cost reduction of parts and components and eventually will help in greening the industry as a whole.
