Director of Supply Chain (Lean Focus)

Client Company / Division Profile:
One of our South Carolina based retained clients, is a capital equipment manufacturer (high mix – low volume) with revenue approaching $100MM whose parent company has consistently grown by over 20% per year for the past two decades to become the driving force in many of their target industry segments. Our client seeks a Director of Supply Chain with a strong Lean background to lead their sourcing, production & inventory control and warehouse/distribution operations.

Target Candidate - Industries & Background:
The ideal candidate will have experience successfully applying and deploying Lean Enterprise principles across the entire supply chain value stream. The ideal candidate will have a strong supply chain background in order to lead an organization that spans sourcing, S&OP process (sales and operational planning), P&IC (production and inventory control), and warehouse/distribution management in a low volume-high mix technical product manufacturing. The ideal candidate will come from an industry background in the capital equipment or a similar low-volume, high-mix complex manufacturing environment.

Position Description and Responsibilities:
In this key role, the Director of Supply Chain will be a member of the core leadership team of our client’s organization reporting directly the Vice President of Operations. This role will be responsible for providing insightful Lean Enterprise leadership to all team members (both hourly and salaried) engaged in the planning, sourcing, inventory management and flow of materials, component parts, electronics, and machinery to support our client’s complex low volume – high mix manufacturing and service business. Key to success in this role is the ability lead/mentor lasting and sustainable business results through the use of influencing skills, creating buy-in at all levels and across all functions of the business. The Director of Supply Chain will serve the business in the following capacity

  • Change Agent… Lead, facilitate, and manage continuous improvement methods across the entire supply chain organization.
  • Supplier Management…Develop and implement Lean supplier and inventory strategies to maximize operational performance.
  • Drive Key Process Indicators (KPI)… Quality, velocity, on-time deliveries and inventory investment.
  • Manage Entire Supply Chain… Responsible for all sourcing, and inventory management including planning, procuring, receiving, stocking and distribution for dependent and independent demand value streams.
  • Continuous Improvement… Leverage continuous improvement tools & Lean into/with suppliers, planning, inventory practices and supply chain processes.
  • Project Management... Lead/manage projects related to improvements in supply chain performance with sustainable results.
  • Leadership/Management… Lead a team including the functions of Purchasing, Planning and Inventory Control and Stock Room, Shipping and Receiving with an overall organization of 30 – 40 team members.
  • Advocate for Process Improvements… Champion for change that leads to meaningful results that impact all who interact with our client’s company.

Position Critical to Quality + Success (CTQ+S): Technical Requirements:

  • BS/BA with preference for technical discipline, or Material Management
  • MBA a plus
  • 10+ years of increasing responsibility in supply chain management - emphasis on technical products...low volume high mix
  • Strong Lean Enterprise experience - with a focus on supply chain management
  • Experience in a leadership role driving a culture of change and continuous improvement
  • Must be product, process and systems technically oriented.
  • Strong fiscal discipline, with the ability to prioritize and translate results into meaningful financial impact.
  • Certification/extensive training in Lean
